What To Wear For Your Boudoir Session | Choosing Pieces That Make You Feel Incredible

One of the biggest questions women ask before their boudoir session is:

“What should I wear?”

And honestly?

The answer matters far less than most people think.

The most beautiful boudoir photographs aren’t created by wearing the “perfect” lingerie or having a certain body type. They happen when you feel comfortable, confident, and connected to yourself within what you’re wearing.

Boudoir sessions with Hollow & Hearth are designed to feel calm, supportive, and deeply personal, which means your wardrobe should feel like an extension of you, not a costume you feel uncomfortable in.

The goal is never perfection.

It’s creating imagery that feels feminine, emotive, powerful, soft, and honest all at once.

Start With What Makes You Feel Good

You do not need to wear tiny lingerie sets if that doesn’t feel like you.

Some women feel incredible in delicate lace bodysuits. Others prefer oversized shirts, cosy knits, soft robes, simple underwear, or pieces that feel more understated and intimate.

Confidence photographs far more beautifully than discomfort ever will.

The best wardrobe choices are always the ones that make you feel most like yourself.

Let's Talk Lingerie...

Choosing Colours That Photograph Beautifully

For boudoir photography, softer and richer tones tend to photograph beautifully within the Hollow & Hearth studio style.

Some of my favourite tones include:

  • black

  • white

  • soft greys

  • blush pinks

  • earthy neutrals

  • muted reds

  • soft blues

These colours work beautifully against the moody, warm, industrial-inspired studio environment while keeping the focus on you rather than overly distracting patterns or bright colours.

Simple almost always photographs more timelessly.

The Right Fit Changes Everything

This is probably the most important advice I can give.

Properly fitted lingerie makes such a huge difference to both comfort and confidence during your session.

Pieces that are too tight can dig into the skin and become uncomfortable quickly, while pieces that fit well allow you to move, relax, and feel more present throughout the experience.

If possible, I always recommend being professionally fitted beforehand, especially for bras or structured pieces.

And please don’t stress about sizing labels.

Nobody sees the tag except you.

Boudoir Outfit Ideas That Photograph Beautifully

There’s absolutely no single “correct” boudoir outfit.

Some beautiful options include:

  • bodysuits & teddies

  • oversized shirts

  • matching lingerie sets

  • soft robes or kimonos

  • slips or babydolls

  • cosy knitwear

  • shapewear bodysuits

  • simple bralettes & underwear

  • meaningful personal pieces

Layering different textures can also create beautiful depth within your images, lace, linen, silk, sheer fabrics, knits, and soft cotton all photograph beautifully together.

Styling Around Your Comfort Levels

Every woman has areas she feels more or less confident about, and that’s completely normal.

The beauty of boudoir styling is that outfits can be chosen intentionally to highlight the areas you love most while helping you feel comfortable and supported in the areas you may feel more self-conscious about.

High-waisted pieces, sleeves, robes, layering, and softer silhouettes can all create beautiful balance without needing to hide yourself.

Because boudoir isn’t about shrinking or disguising who you are.

It’s about meeting yourself with softness instead of criticism.

Accessories & Personal Touches

Sometimes the smallest details become the most meaningful parts of a session.

Jewellery, your partner’s shirt, heirloom pieces, boots, books, flowers, tattoos, or sentimental items can all add layers of personality and storytelling to your final gallery.

Boudoir sessions should feel personal.

The more the experience reflects you, the more emotionally connected your images tend to feel afterward.

You Don’t Need To “Look A Certain Way”

This part matters.

You do not need to lose weight, tone up, change yourself, or become more confident before booking a boudoir session.

The confidence so many women see in their final images usually wasn’t fully there when they first walked into the studio.

It often grows quietly throughout the experience itself.

And honestly, that transformation is one of the most beautiful parts.
