What to Expect at Your Newborn Photography Session (Gold Coast Guide)

Welcoming a new baby changes everything.

Time blurs. Days slow down. The smallest details suddenly feel enormous.

A newborn session isn’t about perfect poses. It’s about holding onto a chapter that passes far too quickly.

At Hollow & Hearth, newborn photography sessions on the Gold Coast are calm, unhurried, and guided entirely by your baby. There is space for feeding, settling, cuddling, and pausing whenever needed. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is forced.

This guide is here to gently walk you through what to expect, how to prepare, and how to make the most of your session.

WHAT TO WEAR

Comfort matters more than anything.
Soft, simple clothing photographs beautifully and keeps the focus on connection and closeness.

The studio is kept warm for your baby, so light, breathable layers are best for you.

Neutral and earthy tones work beautifully, creams, browns, taupes, soft greys, and muted colours. Coordinate rather than match.

Your newborn doesn’t need an outfit. They’ll be gently wrapped or photographed naturally so their tiny details can shine.

Barefoot is perfect. Bring one backup outfit for everyone, just in case.

PREPARING FOR YOUR SESSION

There’s very little you need to do.

Your baby doesn’t need to arrive sleepy or settled; they just need to arrive as they are.

If you’re breastfeeding and taking antibiotics, please let me know. Some parents choose to avoid foods that may cause tummy sensitivity beforehand (This includes trying new foods). This is completely optional!

If possible, avoid vaccinations the day before your session to reduce the chance of discomfort.

Most importantly, don’t stress. Babies will be babies, and we work gently with whatever shows up.

THE DAY OF YOUR SESSION

If possible, give your baby a full feed before arriving. You’re always welcome to feed at the studio.

Bring extra milk or bottles — babies often feed more during sessions.

Burp your baby well before we begin, and bring a dummy even if you don’t usually use one. It can be incredibly soothing if needed.

Dress your baby in loose, soft clothing to avoid skin marks, and feel free to bring along any sentimental items you’d love to include.

WHAT TO BRING

  • Nappies, wipes, and burp cloths

  • Two changes of clothes for baby

  • A change of clothes for yourselves

  • Extra milk or bottles

  • Dummy or pacifier

  • Water and snacks

  • Quiet toys for siblings

Sessions can last up to three hours, so settling in comfortably is part of the experience.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR SESSION

We’ll begin with family and sibling images first (if applicable), then move into solo photographs of your baby, guided by how they’re feeling on the day.

Newborn sessions typically last between two to three hours, with plenty of time for feeding and settling.

Only one newborn session is booked per day, so there is never any rush. Arriving around 10 minutes early helps everything begin calmly.

NEWBORN SESSION FAQs

What if my baby won’t settle?

That’s completely normal. Newborns don’t follow a schedule, and they don’t need to. We move slowly, take breaks, and follow your baby’s lead.

What if we’re running late or things feel chaotic?

You’re not behind. Newborn life is unpredictable, and your session is designed with that in mind. Nothing is rushed.

I’m feeling overwhelmed — is that normal?

Yes. Completely. This space is gentle, supportive, and unrushed. You don’t need to hold it all together here.
