Every baby approaches a cake smash session differently.
Some dive straight into the icing without hesitation, while others take their time, carefully exploring every texture, colour, and tiny handful of cake one curious moment at a time.
Charli was absolutely the second kind.
She approached her cake with the gentlest little hands, slowly picking at the buttercream and sponge as though she was carefully deciding whether the whole situation could truly be trusted. Every tiny expression felt thoughtful and observant, and honestly, it suited her personality so perfectly.
And while the cake was approached delicately… the bath portion of the session was an entirely different story.
Most babies settle happily into splashing around once bath time begins. Charli, however, decided the tub was less of a bath and more of an adventure course.
In and out. Then back in again. Then halfway out once more.
Completely determined. Completely curious. Completely herself.
It had everyone in the studio laughing watching her turn the bubble bath clean-up into her own tiny exploration session.
That’s one of the things I love most about cake smash photography.
No two babies ever respond the same way.
Some are beautifully messy from the very first handful of cake. Some barely touch it at all. Some are cautious, some chaotic, some endlessly curious, and some simply want to play.
And every version of that is worth remembering.
The goal of these sessions has never been creating perfectly posed moments. It’s about preserving personality, connection, and the little quirks parents already know and love deeply within this season.
Because long after the first birthday decorations disappear, these tiny expressions and habits are often the things families miss the most.
