The Best Time To Book Maternity Photos | Gold Coast Maternity Photography

One of the most common questions I get asked is:

“When should I book my maternity photos?”

And honestly?

The sweet spot for most maternity photography sessions is usually between 28–34 weeks pregnant.

At this stage, your belly is beautifully round and visible, but most mums are still feeling relatively comfortable enough to move, walk, and enjoy the experience without feeling completely exhausted.

Of course, every pregnancy is different, and there’s never one strict “perfect” timeline that fits everyone.

Why 28–34 Weeks Works Best

This stage of pregnancy tends to balance everything beautifully.

Your bump has usually “popped” properly by this point, while still allowing enough comfort and flexibility for:

  • walking during outdoor sessions

  • movement in dresses

  • cuddling toddlers

  • sitting and posing comfortably

  • feeling more relaxed overall

For many mums, later pregnancy can start bringing increased swelling, fatigue, discomfort, or the very real feeling of:
“okay I am DONE now”

Which is why photographing slightly before the very end often feels more enjoyable physically.

What If You’re Expecting Twins Or A High-Risk Pregnancy?

For twin pregnancies or higher-risk pregnancies, maternity sessions are often recommended slightly earlier, usually around 24–30 weeks, depending on comfort and medical advice.

Because every pregnancy journey looks different, your session timing should always feel supportive of you and your body first.

When Should You Actually Book Your Session?

Even though the session itself usually happens around 28–34 weeks, I recommend booking your maternity photography much earlier if possible.

Especially during busy seasons.

Many families secure their session during the second trimester to ensure availability for:

  • sunset sessions

  • weekend dates

  • specific locations

  • client wardrobe access

  • newborn package planning

Booking earlier also gives plenty of time to organise styling, wardrobe, and location planning without stress later on.

It’s About More Than Just The Baby Bump

Maternity photography isn’t only about documenting what your pregnancy looked like.

It’s about preserving the feeling of this season before everything changes.

The anticipation.
The connection.
The waiting.
The final chapter before meeting your baby.

And honestly?

That season passes far more quickly than most mums expect.
