Cake Smash Photography Gold Coast: What If My Baby Won't Sit Alone?
If you've been looking at cake smash photos and thinking, "Yeah... that's cute, but there is absolutely no way my baby is going to sit happily in the middle of a set by themselves," I promise you're not the only one. 😂
Your Baby Doesn't Need to Sit Perfectly for Their Cake Smash Photos!
One of the biggest things I want parents to know before coming into my Gold Coast photography studio for a cake smash session is that your baby doesn't need to perform for me.
They don't need to sit perfectly. They don't need to love cake. They don't need to smile on command. And they definitely don't need to be comfortable with Mum or Dad standing on the other side of the room.
Every baby who comes into my studio is completely different, and that's kind of the whole point.
Some Babies Just Need Their Person Close
At around one year old, babies have BIG opinions for people who still occasionally try to eat things off the floor. 😂
Some will crawl onto the set, immediately destroy the cake and barely acknowledge that their parents exist.
Others take a little while to warm up.
Some want Mum sitting beside them.
Some need Dad within touching distance.
Some are happy until we move three centimetres away and then suddenly we've committed an unforgivable crime.
All of those babies are welcome here.
A cake smash photoshoot is already a lot for a little person. They're in a new environment with a human they've never met, surrounded by unfamiliar things, and then we plonk a whole cake in front of them and apparently expect them to understand the assignment.
Sometimes they need a little extra reassurance.
And that's okay.
Mum Was About 10cm Away From These Photos
This little guy is the PERFECT example.
Looking through the finished gallery, you'd probably assume he was sitting on the set by himself while Mum watched from somewhere behind me.
Nope. 😂
Mum was basically right there.
For these most of these images she was never more than about 10cm away, ready to reassure him, steady him or scoop him up whenever he needed her.
And that's where a little bit of photography magic comes in.
I'm pretty bloody good at positioning parents just outside my frame, changing my angle, shooting around arms and hands, cropping strategically and waiting for those tiny windows where everything comes together (sometimes even a little photoshop magic!).
The finished photograph doesn't need to show what was happening two centimetres outside the frame.
And sometimes the behind-the-scenes view looks a little more like this...
Same baby. Same session. Same beautiful memories.
Just with the support he needed to feel safe while we created them.
You Are Never Ruining the Photos by Comforting Your Baby
Please read that again if you need to.
You are never ruining the photos by comforting your baby.
If your little one reaches for you during their cake smash, go to them.
If they need a cuddle, cuddle them.
If they need you sitting right beside them, sit beside them.
If they need ten minutes to investigate the studio before we even think about starting, that's what we'll do!
I'd much rather photograph a baby who feels safe with Mum or Dad 10cm away than have everyone stressed because we're trying to force them to sit alone for the sake of a photograph.
I can move.
I can change my angle.
I can reframe the shot.
I can wait.
I can photograph around you.
Your one-year-old doesn't need to suddenly develop independence because you've booked professional photos.
BUT what If My Baby Cries During Their Cake Smash?
Then they cry.
Seriously. 😂
Crying doesn't mean the session has failed.
Sometimes babies need a cuddle and they're completely fine afterwards. Sometimes they're tired, hungry, unsure about the cake, overwhelmed by a texture or simply having a very one-year-old kind of day.
We take our time and follow their lead.
And despite what Instagram might have you believe, not every baby loves their birthday cake.
Some absolutely demolish it.
Some delicately poke it with one finger.
Some refuse to touch it.
Some eat approximately their entire body weight in buttercream.
Some decide the bubbles afterwards are approximately 9000% more exciting than the expensive cake sitting beside them. 😂
All of those reactions are part of their personality at this exact age, and that's what I want to capture.
What Happens During a Cake Smash Session at Hollow & Hearth Photography?
My cake smash sessions on the Gold Coast aren't just about getting one perfect photo of your baby sitting behind a cake.
They're designed around your little human.
We'll usually start slowly and give them a chance to settle into the studio before expecting anything from them. We can play, bring out bubbles, let them explore and have Mum or Dad close while they work out what the hell is going on.
We also start without the cake to let them warm up to me and the big scary looking camera that can be overwheliming for some… then comes the cake and whatever beautiful chaos follows. 🎂
And afterwards, we can finish with the little tub, bubbles and splash photos, which quite often become the favourite part of the entire session.
The goal isn't perfection.
It's to create a gallery that actually feels like your baby at one.
Their serious little expressions. Their belly laughs. Their curiosity. Their cake-covered fingers. The face they make when they decide buttercream is suspicious. The way they immediately look for Mum when they're unsure.
That's the stuff I want you to remember.
Cake Smash Photography for Real Babies, Not Perfect Ones
I think sometimes social media accidentally gives parents the impression that photographers have access to a secret population of perfectly cooperative babies.
We absolutely do not. 😂
You're just seeing the fraction of a second I photographed.
Behind that image might have been Mum crouching beside me, Dad blowing bubbles, someone making ridiculous noises, a cuddle break, a snack, a runaway baby and approximately seventeen attempts to stop them eating something they found on the floor.
That's normal.
My job as your photographer isn't to wait for you to bring me a perfectly behaved baby.
My job is to know how to photograph the baby you bring me.
And honestly, I wouldn't want it any other way.
