Gold Coast Cake Smash Prep Guide | What to Expect at Your Baby’s First Birthday Session
Your baby is turning one.
Somehow.
One whole year of late nights, sleepy cuddles, tiny giggles, snack negotiations, first milestones, and watching this little person slowly become themselves completely.
Cake smash photography sessions are such a beautiful way to celebrate your baby’s first birthday and preserve this season exactly as it felt, messy, emotional, playful, chaotic, and full of personality.
And if you’ve never booked a cake smash session before, it’s completely normal to wonder what to expect.
So this guide is here to help.
Not to create pressure or perfection, but to help you feel prepared, relaxed, and reassured that chaos is completely normal when one-year-olds and cake are involved.
Because honestly?
Some babies absolutely destroy the cake within seconds. Some gently poke one finger into the icing and decide they’re done. Some laugh hysterically. Some cry. Some just want cuddles the entire time.
All of it is okay.
Cake smash photography sessions with Hollow & Hearth are intentionally relaxed and completely baby-led. My role is simply to create a calm space and capture your little one exactly as they are during this fleeting milestone season.
And usually, the best photos happen somewhere in the messy in-between moments anyway.
Before Your Cake Smash Session
A Few Things That Really Help
The biggest thing I can say before your session is this:
Please don’t stress.
Babies pick up on our energy so easily, and the more relaxed you feel arriving into the session, the easier the entire experience tends to flow for everyone.
A few simple things can really help beforehand:
Let Them Try Cake Beforehand
Some babies love the idea of cake but aren’t too sure about the texture once it’s sitting in front of them.
Letting your little one try a small amount of cake or icing a few days beforehand can help it feel a little more familiar on the day.
Plan Around Naps If Possible
A tired one-year-old plus sugar is a truly unpredictable combination.
A good nap beforehand honestly makes such a difference to how settled your baby feels throughout the session.
Feed Them Before You Arrive
Even though cake is involved, hungry babies generally don’t want photos first.
A light meal or snack before your first birthday photography session helps your little one settle in comfortably before the cake comes out.
Bring Comfort Items
Dummy? Favourite toy? Comfort blanket?
Bring it all.
I’d always rather have a settled, reassured baby than worry about keeping things perfectly aesthetic.
Prepare for a Little Mess
The icing will absolutely end up everywhere.
On them. On you. Sometimes on me. Occasionally somehow in their eyelashes.
That’s part of the fun honestly.
What To Bring To Your Cake Smash Session
The good news is you really don’t need to bring half the house with you.
Simple is always best.
A few helpful things to pack include:
A spare outfit for afterwards
Wipes and a towel (I do provide towels in the Hollow & Hearth Studio)
Snacks and water
Any sentimental items you’d love included
Let’s Talk About The Cake
Every cake smash photography session with Hollow & Hearth includes a professionally made single-barrel cake designed to suit the styling and theme of your setup, helping take some of the stress and organising off your plate.
The cakes are intentionally kept fairly simple so the focus stays on your little one and all their funny little reactions throughout the experience.
If your child has allergies or dietary requirements, please let me know before your session. Allergy-friendly cakes can absolutely be arranged, though additional costs may apply depending on requirements.
And honestly, every baby reacts differently to cake.
Some completely destroy it within seconds.
Others gently poke the icing once and decide they’re emotionally done with the experience.
Some are far more interested in the cake topper, balloons, or crawling away from the setup entirely.
All of that is completely normal.
Please don’t stress if your little one doesn’t fully “smash” the cake.
I promise beautiful first birthday photos don’t depend on complete cake destruction.
What Happens During The Session?
Cake smash sessions are designed to feel calm, playful, and flexible.
Sessions take place in my private Pimpama studio on the Northern Gold Coast, where everything is styled and prepared before you arrive so the experience feels easy and relaxed from the beginning.
We usually begin with cleaner portraits before the cake comes out, capturing little smiles, details, family photographs if included, and those sweet expressions before the icing chaos begins.
Once the cake is introduced, we simply follow your baby’s lead.
There’s no rush.
Sometimes we need dance breaks. Sometimes snack breaks. Sometimes cuddles. Sometimes a complete reset because your little one suddenly decides sitting still is deeply offensive.
That’s normal.
One-year-olds are wonderfully unpredictable little humans.
That’s what makes these first birthday and milestone photography sessions so special.
And please know there is absolutely no judgement if your child cries, clings to you, or needs extra reassurance throughout the session.
Truly.
After Your Cake Smash Session
After your session, I carefully go through your gallery and hand-select the strongest images to edit.
I’m always drawn to genuine moments over perfection, the messy hands, serious concentration faces, little laughs, movement, cuddles, and all the personality that unfolds naturally throughout the session.
Your final gallery is designed to preserve this season honestly, exactly as it felt.
And yes… the icing-covered images usually become the unexpected parent favourites.
A Little Note For Parents
Please don’t walk into your session feeling like your child needs to perform perfectly.
Some of the most beautiful cake smash galleries I’ve ever delivered involved tears, cuddles, clingy moments, snack breaks, and babies who wanted absolutely nothing to do with the cake for half the session.
Your child does not need to sit still, smile on command, or behave perfectly.
They simply need to be themselves.
That’s the entire point.
And as a mum myself, I promise there’s zero judgement here if things feel a little chaotic.
That’s real life.
Ready To Celebrate?
Cake smash photography sessions are messy, funny, emotional, chaotic, joy-filled little celebrations of an entire year of growth, both for your baby and for you.
And one day, these photos will remind you exactly who your little person was during this season.
Sticky fingers, icing-covered cheeks and all.
