Before Three Became Four | A Sunrise Family Maternity Session on the Gold Coast
There’s something really special about photographing families in the season right before everything changes.
That in-between chapter where routines still feel familiar, tiny hands still belong entirely to mum and dad, and one little person is still the centre of the whole world… while another quietly grows in the background, waiting to arrive.
This sunrise maternity session felt exactly like that.
Soft, playful, emotional, and full of the kind of moments that can’t really be posed.
We met just after sunrise while the beach was still quiet, the sky wrapped in soft pastel light and the ocean calm enough to feel almost still. Their little girl arrived full of energy from the second her feet hit the sand, completely ready to explore, run, collect shells, and keep everyone laughing the entire session.
Honestly, those are always my favourite kinds of family maternity sessions.
The ones where children are simply allowed to be children.
No pressure to stand perfectly still. No forced smiles. No expectations beyond being together.
Some of the sweetest moments came from the in-between ones, tiny arms wrapped around mum’s growing belly, sandy cuddles between waves, little giggles while dad chased her along the shoreline, and those quieter moments where reality seemed to settle in for just a second:
Soon, there would be four.
That’s the beautiful thing about maternity photography after your first baby.
It’s no longer only about documenting pregnancy itself. It becomes about preserving the relationship your child had with you before becoming a big sibling. The final season where everything still revolved around the three of you before your family expanded again.
And honestly? That chapter disappears far quicker than most parents expect.
The beach gave us the dreamiest backdrop for it all, soft golden light, salty air, wind through flowing fabric, and the kind of relaxed atmosphere that lets connection unfold naturally without needing much direction at all.
These are the sessions I love most.
The playful ones.
The emotional ones.
The beautifully chaotic ones that feel more like memories than photographs.
Because one day, these images won’t only remind them what this season looked like.
They’ll remind them what it felt like too.
