There’s something extra magical about first birthday cake smash sessions.

Maybe it’s the way one-year-olds approach absolute chaos with complete confidence. Or the way parents stand just off camera laughing while wondering how their tiny newborn somehow turned into this hilarious little person with opinions, expressions, and endless energy.

Either way, this winter wonderland cake smash session was pure joy from beginning to end.

From the soft snowy setup to the tiny blue bowtie and cheeky little smiles, every part of this first birthday photography session felt playful, cosy, and full of personality.

And honestly?

The bath splash at the end may have completely stolen the show.

A Winter Wonderland First Birthday Theme

This setup was designed around a soft winter wonderland theme, blending snowy textures, forest-inspired details, cosy cabin elements, and playful pops of blue and green throughout the styling.

The oversized balloon installation, tiny vintage truck, glowing ONE letters, and snowy little cabin backdrop created the sweetest atmosphere for this milestone session while still keeping the focus beautifully on the birthday boy himself.

I always try to create cake smash themes that feel playful and visually exciting for little ones without becoming overly cluttered or overwhelming within photographs.

Simple details. Soft styling. Lots of room for personality.

That’s always the goal.

The Sweetest Little Personality

One of my favourite parts of cake smash photography is seeing how differently every baby reacts to the experience.

Some babies dive face-first into the cake within seconds.

Others approach it very cautiously like tiny suspicious food critics.

And some are simply more interested in the decorations, balloons, or attempting to escape the setup entirely.

This little guy gave us the best mix of curiosity, sweetness, and cheeky smiles throughout the session. The serious concentration while investigating the cake quickly turned into messy little hands, icing-covered fingers, and the happiest little grin once he realised he was absolutely allowed to make a mess.

Honestly, those moments are always my favourite.

The unplanned ones.

The expressions parents will recognise instantly years later.

The Bubble Bath Splash Session

And then came the bath.

Which is almost always where babies suddenly decide this might actually be the best day of their lives.

The little clawfoot bath filled with bubbles became an instant hit, complete with splashing, giggles, balloon stealing, and enough water movement to soak half the studio floor.

Worth it though.

Always.

Bath splash photos are honestly one of the most loved parts of cake smash sessions because babies relax completely once the water comes out. The result is usually huge smiles, natural laughter, and some of the most personality-filled images from the entire gallery.

And really, there’s something very poetic about ending a messy first birthday session with bubbles and chaos.
